Beginning in 1956, journalists chose the finest European player of the previous year to receive the award. In 1995, it was extended to all players in Europe, and in 2007, it was extended to all players worldwide. The award was presented in association with FIFA for six years, from 2010 to 2015, before the cooperation terminated and FIFA switched back to their own yearly award. In the present version, an international jury of journalists (one from each nation) votes on the award, which is granted for accomplishments throughout a football season rather than a calendar year.
